A stop before the session: limits, warning signs, and help

This page is a reading guide for adults in Malaysia. It is published on 365cuci.de. It is not a clinic, and it does not take bets. A limit you write down before a session can reduce how much time or money is exposed. It does not make gambling safe, it does not guarantee that you will keep to it, and it does not win back money already lost.

What a personal stop is, and what it is not

A personal stop is a decision you make before the first stake: a length of time, or an amount of money you can lose, after which you leave. It is optional. Nothing on this website can enforce it. The World Health Organization describes a different tool, used at population level: binding pre-commitment, where an account requires a limit that the person cannot simply talk themselves out of. WHO also says voluntary measures are poorly taken up and cannot be enforced, and that optional “responsible gambling” messages have often been ineffective. A note you write for yourself is the weaker, voluntary kind. Treat it as a risk-reduction step, not as proof that you are in control.

WHO’s gambling fact sheet, dated 2 December 2024, says gambling can lead to serious harm. The harms it names include financial stress, relationship breakdown, family violence, mental illness, and suicide. Harm can last and can affect other people in a family. Setting a stop does not remove those risks.

Warning signs, including harm below a diagnosis

WHO places gambling disorder with substance-use disorders in the International Classification of Diseases, 11th revision. It lists three diagnostic requirements: impaired control over gambling; gambling taking priority over other interests and daily activities; and continuing despite negative consequences. This page cannot tell you whether those requirements apply to you. A diagnosis is a clinical judgment.

Harm also occurs below that line. WHO points to money being diverted from essential household spending, including food, housing, healthcare, and education. If a session is paid for with money that was meant for any of those, the session has already crossed a harm line, whether or not anyone has used a diagnostic label.

A stop that you rewrite because you are behind is no longer the stop you set. Raising the amount, extending the time, or opening a second session the same night abandons that decision. Continuing does not recover the money already lost. It keeps the exposure open. WHO’s third diagnostic requirement is continuation despite negative consequences. That is a clinical requirement, not a label this page can apply to you.

How to write a stop without turning it into a staking plan

Write the stop before you open a game, not after a loss. Use your own time and your own money figure. This guide will not suggest a stake, a unit size, or a percentage of income. Those numbers would pretend that a safe dose exists. It does not.

Keep the figure where you will see it, on paper or in a note that is not inside the game. When the time is up, or the money is gone, leave. Do not replace the figure with a new one in the same session. A later session, on another day, can have its own stop. That is still not a guarantee you will follow it.

This page does not explain how a table is settled, and it does not pick a game.

Where an adult in Malaysia can ask for help

If you are in immediate danger, or you need urgent medical help, contact local emergency services. That is the instruction published by Befrienders Kuala Lumpur. This website is not an emergency service.

Befrienders Kuala Lumpur is a not-for-profit in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Its own pages, read on 19 October 2026, describe emotional support for people who are lonely, in distress, in despair, or having thoughts of suicide. The service is free and confidential, and the organisation says trained volunteers answer the phone 24 hours a day. The emotional-support number printed on its contact page is +603-7627 2929. The pages do not describe that line as treatment for gambling disorder, and they do not describe the volunteers as the caller’s clinician. Use it for the emotional support they offer. Do not expect it to close an account, reverse a payment, or act as a casino complaints desk.

WHO says the treatments with the strongest evidence it cites, for gambling disorder, are long-term cognitive behavioural therapy or motivational interviewing. Those are clinical services. This article is not therapy, and the byline is not a clinical qualification. WHO also notes that few people seek help, and that stigma is one reason. Asking is allowed. A listening line and a clinic do different jobs.

Questions about stopping

Does a written limit make the session safe?

No. It can only reduce exposure if you actually leave when you said you would. WHO describes optional limits as poorly taken up and not enforceable. Gambling can still cause serious harm.

Can I use a percentage of income as the limit?

This page will not give you one. A percentage would imply a level that is safe to lose. The fact sheet does not support that idea.

Is Befrienders a gambling-treatment clinic?

No. Its published service is emotional support and suicide-prevention listening, by trained volunteers, for people in Malaysia who can reach that Kuala Lumpur service. It is not this website, and it is not an operator’s customer desk.

Pages read on 19 October 2026

  • World Health Organization, “Gambling”, fact sheet dated 2 December 2024. Supports the harm list, the ICD-11 requirements as WHO states them, harm below a diagnosis, binding pre-commitment as a population measure, and the weakness of voluntary measures. Also names long-term cognitive behavioural therapy or motivational interviewing as the treatments with the strongest evidence WHO cites.
  • Befrienders Kuala Lumpur, “About us”. Supports the description of a free, confidential, 24-hour emotional-support service for people who are lonely, in distress, in despair, or having suicidal thoughts, answered by trained volunteers.
  • Befrienders Kuala Lumpur, “Contact us”. Supports the emotional-support number +603-7627 2929, the Petaling Jaya address, and the instruction to contact local emergency services when someone is in immediate danger or needs urgent medical help.
